Where does the ship dock?

Fort-de-France is both a compact Caribbean capital and the centre of a larger French island transport network. Pointe Simon supports an easy city walk; Tourelles needs its own route. The market, library, cathedral, fort and waterfront fit a short call, while gardens, distilleries and volcanic history need planned travel.

Can I walk into town?

At Pointe Simon, begin with La Savane. At Tourelles, follow the ship’s current link into town. Ferries across the bay can be useful, but record the departure pontoon, final cruise-safe return and whether the service lands at Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan or another stop.

Practical information

French is official and Martinican Creole is widely spoken. The euro is the local currency. Heat and showers combine with air-conditioned interiors, while road conditions vary sharply between the capital, hills and volcanic north. Save terminal and ferry details offline.

What fits the day?

Two hours covers La Savane, the library and market. Half a day can add Fort Saint-Louis or a bay crossing. Jardin de Balata needs a planned road trip. Saint-Pierre, Habitation Clement and distant beaches are full-day choices with a single coherent route, not additions to a city walk.

Safety and return

Metropolitan traffic is the main return risk. Bay ferries have timetables, island roads can queue and Tourelles is not Pointe Simon. Use ship time, set a firm turnaround and retain enough cash and battery for a taxi if the planned ferry or bus connection fails.
