Where does the ship dock?
Ketchikan is a working waterfront town folded between Tongass Narrows and temperate rainforest. Downtown ships arrive inside that story; Ward Cove guests begin with a shuttle from an industrial mill landscape. The honest first decision is arrival identity, because it changes how much of a short call can be spent beyond the centre.
Can I walk into town?
Creek Street, the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, Tongass Historical Museum and Totem Heritage Center give a layered central day. Saxman and Totem Bight require respectful interpretation and transport. Misty Fjords, wildlife boats and floatplanes are weather-led headline choices, not quick additions.
Practical information
Rain is ordinary and makes timber, roots, metal ramps and boardwalks slick. Flight and boat operators may cancel for sound reasons. Wildlife is not a prop or guarantee; follow local distance guidance and keep a museum-and-waterfront route ready when cloud closes in.
What fits the day?
Two hours fits the waterfront and Creek Street from a downtown berth, but less from Ward Cove. Half a day can add one museum or nearby interpreted site. A full day should choose one remote rainforest, wildlife, flight or boat experience and preserve the shuttle or berth margin.

Respect Alaska Native cultural property, working fishing spaces and residents above Creek Street. Use interpreted sites to learn whose designs and stories are being shared. Finish at the exact berth, tender or Ward Cove shuttle rather than trusting the sightline along Tongass Narrows.
