Where does the ship dock?
Save the pier, shuttle or tender first. The famous wall is visible context, not a substitute for the controlled ship-return route south of town.
Can I walk into town?
Visby grew through Baltic exchange and Hanseatic wealth, but conflict, plague, farming and island labour sit behind the merchant image. Medieval Week is a dated modern gathering, not permanent costume.
Practical information
The wall walk, cobbles, ruins and beaches vary sharply. Ground-level gates, gardens and museum routes can create a strong alternative without pretending every tower is accessible.
What fits the day?
Two hours supports a wall-and-lanes loop. Half a day adds the museum or ruins. A long call can include one rural Gotland outing with a deliberately early return.
Safety and return
Visby is home to residents inside and outside the wall. Keep doorways and cycle routes clear, conserve water when asked, and treat church ruins as heritage rather than props.

Family port-day note
Keep the family port day realistic
At Visby, tender queues can add waiting and uncertainty for children, buggies and anyone who needs a steadier transfer. Choose one main experience, such as Visby ring wall and gates; carry water and shade, locate toilets early and keep a generous return margin before the ship’s final tender time.
