Where does the ship dock?
Icy Strait Point is not a generic wilderness park placed beside Hoonah. It is a Huna Totem Corporation project on Huna Tlingit homeland, built through a former salmon cannery to create community opportunity. That ownership should shape how visitors listen, spend and understand every boardwalk, story and excursion.
Can I walk into town?
The restored cannery, shoreline paths, cultural programmes and Hoonah connection can fill a thoughtful close-to-port day. Whale watching, bear searches, mountain gondola and ZipRider capacity are separate headline choices. Choose Native-owned or community-linked interpretation where available and do not stack wildlife promises.
Practical information
Chichagof Island is bear country and the waters support whales, but sightings are not permission to approach. Stay with guides, obey distances and never leave food or a route to improve a photograph. Rain, fog and sea conditions can cancel plans without making the shore day empty.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits the cannery, shoreline and one cultural stop. Half a day can add Hoonah or the gondola. A full day should be one whale, bear or mountain commitment, returning early enough to enjoy the campus without turning its dock into a final sprint.
Safety and return
Use Huna Tlingit names and stories as hosts present them. Do not copy clan designs, interrupt cultural programmes or treat people as part of the scenery. A respectful visitor leaves space, asks before photographing, supports local work and returns through the exact dock with time to spare.

Keep the family port day realistic
At Icy Strait Point / Hoonah, choose one main experience, such as Historic salmon cannery museum; locate toilets and an easy food or shade stop early, and keep a low-effort fallback close to the arrival point. Buggies, heat, cobbles and tired legs can slow the return more than a map suggests.
