Where does the ship dock?
Valdez sits on a flat shore beneath steep, waterfall-lined mountains at the head of a deep Prince William Sound fjord. The municipal dock makes town feel easy, while the famous glaciers and highway scenery remain genuinely distant. Save the return, then choose town, one boat or one road corridor.
Can I walk into town?
Use both museum locations and old-town interpretation to understand the 1964 earthquake, rebuilding, pipeline era and 1989 oil-spill consequences. Solomon Gulch and hatchery interpretation need wildlife distance and current road access; glaciers should be approached through qualified operators.
Practical information
Rainfall, waterfalls and steep mountains are part of Valdez rather than scenic extras. Boats can alter glacier routes, and highway conditions can change at elevation. Salmon attract bears and birds; obey closures and never approach or feed wildlife.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits the marina and one museum. Half a day can add the old-town route or a nearby waterfall stop. A full day should be either one glacier cruise or one Keystone Canyon–Thompson Pass road plan with a generous dock return.
Safety and return
Respect fishing operations, private property, the pipeline security boundary and the communities affected by industrial history. Keep roadside stops safe. Finish at Kelsey Dock early enough for a small port to absorb one delayed coach without becoming a crisis.

Family port-day note
Keep the family port day realistic
At Valdez, choose one main experience, such as Valdez Small Boat Harbor and marina; locate toilets and an easy food or shade stop early, and keep a low-effort fallback close to the arrival point. Buggies, heat, cobbles and tired legs can slow the return more than a map suggests.
