Where does the ship dock?
Montréal offers an unusually direct transition from ship to historic streets, but the city quickly expands beyond the Old Port. Save the Grand Quay entrance, then choose Old Montréal plus one contrasting neighbourhood, museum or viewpoint.
Can I walk into town?
Tiohtià:ke is Kanien’kehá:ka territory and a meeting place with deep Indigenous continuity. French colonial settlement, British rule, immigration, industry, labour and contemporary Québec identity all require more than one founding date.
Practical information
Winter cold, summer heat and river wind are real; cobbles, steps and steep Mount Royal routes vary. Use accessible entrances published by venues and keep an indoor plan for difficult weather.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits Old Montréal and the waterfront. Half a day can add Pointe-à-Callière or downtown. A full day may include Mount Royal or a market, but one outer commitment is enough.
Safety and return
Old Montréal is a working residential and commercial district, not a preserved set. Respect French names, Indigenous authority, worship and everyday queues, then return to the exact inland terminal saved at arrival.
