Where does the ship dock?
Québec City is immediately theatrical from the river, but a good day starts with the prosaic terminal number. Lower Town’s stone streets sit at water level; Château Frontenac, the walls and Plains of Abraham rise above. Choose an elevation strategy before following the postcard.
Can I walk into town?
Use French place names and hear the city as a living francophone capital, not a preserved European set. Wendat presence, New France, British conquest, Catholic institutions and modern Québec identity all belong in the story.
Practical information
St Lawrence wind, rain, early cold and autumn crowds change the walking effort. Montmorency paths and viewpoints can be wet or icy. Use current access and never make a distant waterfall the final stop before sailing.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits Lower Town. Half a day can add Upper Town and the walls. A full day may include the Plains or one reserved outer trip, but should not stack Montmorency, Île d’Orléans and a hurried old-city circuit.
Safety and return
Respect French language, worship spaces, residents and the living politics behind heritage façades. Keep tour groups from blocking narrow lanes. End at the recorded quay with enough time for security and any terminal transfer.

Family port-day note
Keep the family port day realistic
At Québec City, choose one main experience, such as Place Royale; locate toilets and an easy food or shade stop early, and keep a low-effort fallback close to the arrival point. Buggies, heat, cobbles and tired legs can slow the return more than a map suggests.
