Where does the ship dock?
St John’s has several cruise berths along one harbour, not one interchangeable gate. Heritage Quay, Nevis Street and the newer pier all place visitors near the capital; tender advice applies only when the ship assigns it.
Can I walk into town?
Walk through Heritage Quay, Redcliffe Quay, the museum, cathedral and market. Licensed taxis or vetted tours are appropriate for beaches, Nelson’s Dockyard, Shirley Heights and Devil’s Bridge. Confirm current attraction and park access.
Practical information
English is official, the Eastern Caribbean dollar is local currency and US dollars are commonly accepted. Traffic keeps left. Strong sun, sudden showers and rougher Atlantic-side water require flexible plans.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits the capital waterfront. Half a day fits one nearby beach or a focused city-and-Fort James route. English Harbour or the east coast deserves most of a day and should not be combined with several opposite-coast beaches.
Safety and return
Use licensed transport, agree the return time and keep valuables discreet. Do not climb coastal formations or fort ruins outside signed areas. Island roads can be slow, so leave distant sites at the planned cutoff.
