Where does the ship dock?
Puerto Costa Maya and Mahahual must be planned as separate places. The terminal is a purpose-built cruise complex, while the village, malecón and beach businesses lie south by road. Choose one coherent local, archaeological or lagoon route rather than stacking distant highlights.
Can I walk into town?
Licensed taxis suit Mahahual. Vetted tours are the practical choice for Chacchoben, Bacalar, Kohunlich, Xcalak or marine reserves. Confirm the pickup, return time and whether admission is included.
Practical information
Spanish is the main public language and Maya place names carry regional history. Heat, sudden rain, sargassum, sea conditions and road delays can change an otherwise simple-looking plan.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits the terminal or one focused Mahahual visit. Half a day can cover Mahahual or Chacchoben. Bacalar and Kohunlich are disciplined full-day choices; Banco Chinchorro and Xcalak demand specialist logistics.
Safety and return
Use authorised transport and marine operators, never stand on coral or touch stromatolites, and preserve a conservative turnaround. A distant attraction is not worth a final-minute race through the terminal.
