Where does the ship dock?
Progreso is both a working Gulf port and Mérida’s nearby seaside city. The remote berth, shore transfer, Progreso waterfront and inland capital are four distinct decisions. A short call stays by the coast; Mérida or an archaeological site requires a protected road plan.
Can I walk into town?
Walk the Malecón, beach, market and meteorite museum from the shore transfer. Use licensed transport for El Corchito, Chicxulub, Dzibilchaltún, Xcambó or Mérida. Uxmal warrants one dedicated excursion rather than a crowded multi-stop itinerary.
Practical information
Spanish is the main shared language and Yucatec Maya remains a living language across the region. Heat, sudden rain, limestone terrain and limited shade affect plans. Keep ship time, transfer cutoff and driver contact details available without internet.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits Progreso. Half a day can combine one nearby ecological or archaeological stop with the coast. Mérida needs most of a call, while Uxmal is a disciplined full-day excursion with an early turn-back.
Safety and return
Use authorised transport and verify current site opening. Do not treat the long pier as walkable, the buried crater as a visible hole, or distant ruins as casual add-ons. The final Progreso transfer is the hard return boundary.
