Where does the ship dock?
The port sits beside central Thessaloniki, but working-port controls still separate the ship from the public waterfront. Record the exact gate before walking out.
Can I walk into town?
Build a city route around Aristotelous Square, Roman and Byzantine sites and one museum, or make one Macedonian archaeological gateway the full-day anchor.
Practical information
Check museum closures, worship access, summer heat and traffic. Byzantine interiors require respectful clothing and may have steps.
What fits the day?
Two hours suits the waterfront and centre. Half a day can add one museum or Upper Town. A full day reaches Aigai or Pella, not both without ship control.
Safety and return
Use licensed or ship-vetted transport inland. Do not let a central-looking map hide the road distance from Aigai or Pella back to the cruise gate.

Family port-day note
Keep the family port day realistic
At Thessaloniki, choose one main experience, such as Thessaloniki waterfront promenade; locate toilets and an easy food or shade stop early, and keep a low-effort fallback close to the arrival point. Buggies, heat, cobbles and tired legs can slow the return more than a map suggests.
