Argostoli / Kefalonia Cruise Port Guide

Argostoli’s official harbour includes a cruise pier beside the long sheltered bay. The ship decides whether guests use a berth or tender on the day, and that exact quay or landing must remain the return point before any island road trip.

Where does the ship dock?

Argostoli is both a comfortable waterfront town and the road gateway to Kefalonia’s dramatic interior. A central walk is low risk; caves, beaches and northern villages are separate journeys whose winding roads require a much larger return margin.

Can I walk into town?

The De Bosset Bridge, Koutavos Lagoon, waterfront, archaeological collection and nearby Fanari coast make a coherent local day. Melissani, Drogarati, Myrtos, Assos and Fiskardo should be treated as planned island excursions, not casual add-ons.

Practical information

Keep a respectful distance from loggerhead turtles, check cave boat and beach conditions, and carry sun protection. Earthquake history also means much of Argostoli’s townscape is newer than first impressions of an old Ionian port may suggest.

What fits the day?

Two hours suits the waterfront and bridge. Half a day can add Fanari or one nearby stop. A full day should choose a cave-and-village route or a northern coast route, never both without ship-controlled transport.

Safety and return

Use licensed transport, avoid cliff and roadside edges, and keep the exact quay or tender landing saved. Mountain bends, summer traffic and beach access can turn a modest mileage into a long return.
